Dr Raphael Olaiya is a GP and Lead Health Data Scientist within the NHS, applying clinical data to improve patient outcomes through innovative technologies including artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine from the University of Liverpool (2015) and an MSc in Health Data Science and Computer Science from University College London.

He has served as a Lecturer of Communication of Clinical Practice at the University of Liverpool and as Medical Product Development Director at Olive Media, taking medical e-learning products to market.

Raphael has published peer-reviewed research on machine learning in clinical prediction, including Reviewing the use and quality of machine learning in developing clinical prediction models for cardiovascular disease (Allan, Olaiya and Burhan, 2022, Postgraduate Medical Journal, 98(1161), 551 to 558), conducted through the UCL Centre for Artificial Intelligence. The review demonstrated that machine learning approaches consistently outperform traditional clinical prediction models.

He has also published a chapter in New Perspective on Virtual and Augmented Reality, is a regular contributor to VRFocus, and recently took part in the TEDx Talk: Innovation in Healthcare Panel. He presents on CBBC’s Operation Ouch!, educating younger generations on the human body.
