Getting a prescription shouldn’t require days of waiting. With a same-day online GP appointment, an NHS-trained doctor can assess your symptoms by video or WhatsApp and, where clinically appropriate, issue a prescription the very same day — delivered directly to your door or ready to collect from a local pharmacy.
How same-day online prescriptions work
After your consultation, your GP decides whether medication is the right treatment for you. If it is, the prescription is arranged straight away. You choose whether to have it delivered to your home or to collect it from a pharmacy near you — whichever is faster and more convenient.
What medication can an online GP prescribe?
Online GPs can prescribe medication routinely issued by a GP, including treatments for infections, skin conditions, allergies, migraines and much more. For patient safety, certain groups of medication are not prescribed online:
- Opioids and controlled drugs
- “Z” sleeping tablets
- Medication usually managed under shared care with a specialist, such as ADHD medicines or immunosuppressants
Can I get repeat medication online?
Specific supplies of repeat medication can be prescribed — for example, to cover a holiday when your NHS GP is unable to issue an extended duration. The GP will need to see evidence of your repeat prescription list, when it was last issued, and confirm all necessary monitoring such as blood tests and blood pressure checks is up to date. If you need an emergency supply of repeat medication, your regular pharmacy or NHS 111 may also be able to help.
