What is an online GP consultation?

Understand how online GP consultations work, what conditions they can treat, and why they are a safe, convenient alternative to visiting a clinic.

An online GP consultation is a modern healthcare appointment that connects you with a qualified doctor remotely — via a video call or secure messaging such as WhatsApp — so you can get the care you need from the comfort of your own home. Through MYTRT’s partnership with messageGP, every consultation is with an England-based, GMC-registered, NHS-trained GP, for one flat price of £49.

How do online GP consultations work?

You can either message an online doctor on WhatsApp or book an online video GP appointment through the website. You’ll receive a confirmation with details on how to connect with your doctor at the scheduled time. Video consultations last 20 minutes and take place at times to suit your schedule; WhatsApp consultations let you message as and when you can, with no need to download another app.

What can be treated online?

Many common health concerns can be addressed online, including minor illnesses, infections, skin conditions, allergies, mental health support and general medical advice. Only conditions that can be safely managed online are treated. Some issues — such as new abdominal pain, lumps or severe infections — are better suited to face-to-face appointments, and in an emergency you should always dial 999 or attend your local emergency department.

Is my medical information secure?

Yes. Data security and patient confidentiality are taken very seriously, and consultations take place on secure, encrypted platforms that protect your personal and medical information. messageGP is regulated by the CQC, so you can be confident in the standard of care.
